AUSTRALIA
Australia is a very vast and open country. Although obviously not as cheap or as steeped in historical architecture as Asian destinations, it's certainly worth exploring and there's loads to see. There are loads of World Heritage Sites scattered all over Australia.
When to go:
Don't forget Japan's winter is Australian summer meaning more but more expensive flights at Christmas.
How to go:
Flying non-direct is much cheaper - via hong kong/singapore/ vietnam. (stop-overs can be free - check!)
China Air (via Taiwan) round trip ticket can be about ï¿¥130,000 if booking late over Xmas period.
Visas:
People from most countries need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) through the travel agent before you. Others need visas. Both cost! https://secure.liveinaustralia.com/visitor/ will let you know.
Money:
Australian Dollar
Places to go:
Sydney
Taronga Zoo -
New Year's fireworks - possibly the best in the world, over the harbour bay.
to stay:
Book early for New Year!
Boomerang Backpackers Hostel - pretty good location, you can walk to everywhere no problem. Unfortunately, there is no air con. New Year is very busy in Sydney so prices are bumped up. You may have to book for a block week rather than few nights and they will add extra beds. (about $300AUS for 8 nights).
The Red Desert
Very beautiful.
The Blue Mountains
"a must!"
The Great Barrier Reef
(Queensland) Queensland also has great attractions not to mention the beaches and cafes etc.
Ayer's Rock/ Uluru
Getting up to Ayer's Rock would depend on whether you wanted to see much else in Australia. Two weeks may not be enough time to head out there. Australia's just so darn big! Ayer's Rock is supposed to be much more expensive in terms of lodging or transportation - there aren't a lot of options because it's in the middle of the desert.
